⏱️ Tiny Teach-in Tutoring

🙏 Thank you for agreeing to be a Sleight School Tutor! Below you will find a few tips and best practices to make sure that your Session is successful and as stress and glitch free as possible.

Tech Tips:

• Contrast - Make sure you are using props (coins, cups, cards, etc) that will not “blow out” and be difficult to read under your current lighting. You may need to adjust your lights (draping with cloth or gels) or color of surface, close up mat or tablecloth.

• Autofocus - practice using your autofocus….it is working consistently? Or going in and out? Do you need it turned on?

Sleight School member and award winning cinematographer Larry Fong wrote an excellent article in which he gives good advice for getting the best out of your online video conferencing setup. You can read it HERE.

• Emergency Contact - In case the livestream goes down, is there a way to text you quickly? If you are using your mobile phone for your livestream, then is there an alternate way to text/chat you? If you haven’t already done so, please join the Sleight School WhatsApp Group Chat HERE.

Presentation Tips:

Opening - Open with a one line summary of what is to be taught.

• Run-Through - Practice explaining the routine a few times (to your spouse, partner, dog, cat ,or goldfish) PRIOR to the livestream. Write down a ‘punch-list’ of key points you want to make sure to convey, and have it in front of you to refer to (as needed.)

• Be aware of time constraints - We try to keep the Teach-ins to 30 minutes if possible (hence the term “Tiny”). If there are lots of questions and further explanation required, then 40 minutes is acceptable. Balance the delivery of new content with student participation and feedback.

• Closing Thoughts - Your brief summation can bring the presentation to a satisfying end. It’s best not to ramble on with a long-winded recap. Giving them no more than two bullet points will go further to cement the main ideas and put a punctuation mark at the end of the Session: “Here are the top 2 things to keep in mind when performing this effect: X and Y.”

Show Time

You have been designated as Host of the event. That means that only you have the ability to start and stop the Teach-in.

To begin, from within the community simply navigate to your Teach-in in the Upcoming Events space:

Then click on the Join Room button:

Then click on the gear button to adjust audio and video, and when you’re ready to start the room and recording, click the Start Room button:

Once in the room, use the Chat view to field questions during the Teach-in, and then use the Gallery view to invite Q&A by requesting viewers to “raise their hand” if they want to ask a question. You can then make that person a co-host temporarily while they ask their question.

To end the Teach-in simply click the Leave Room button to end the session and the recording.

Thank you, once again, for sharing your expertise! Have a great session and I’ll see you in Sleight School!
